The loud babble of a river pulled Phe from the dark depths of sleep. Overhead, twinkling lights draped around unusual and ethereal rock formations, depicting a brilliant night sky, one she recognized immediately.

Phe bolted upright, cool tile on her bare feet, and whipped around, taking in the underground river gurgling past her. The distinct tile walkway. The bookcase.

How’d I get into Kyra’s training room?

Phe ran through her last memories. The tree house. Meeting Areya. Drinking tea and being shown her room.

The bond in her chest ached ferociously, deep and unrelenting. Absentmindedly, she rubbed at it as she padded toward the door, realizing it was the first time she’d felt it since Kyra’s abduction.

It didn’t matter how she’d gotten to Oceanid and into Kyra’s training room. Phe’s pace quickened. It only mattered she was no longer in Arias. When she got out of here, she’d figure out how to rescue Kyra.

Around the throb, hope tentatively unfurled.

The pain lessened as she got closer to the door, only to be yanked to a stop with a brutal force that threatened to pull her heart from her chest.

Phe doubled over from the pain, leaning onto the nearby ledge for support.

The agony subsided.

Heaving herself up, she took a step toward the door and the pain returned, but when she leaned onto the ledge again, it eased. She tried it one more time, and the same thing happened. She switched directions, attempting to head to the river, only to experience the same sensation.

Is my pain guiding me?

She swung her feet over the ledge, her bare feet encountering moist, rough rocks.

No pain.

She sidestepped toward the door. The stabbing pain consumed her, forcing her to retreat.

She hesitantly slid a foot across the uneven cavern floor.

No agony.

The tether in her chest pulsed. She took another step, then another.

The lights flickered. Or maybe that was her imagination?

Phe’d never been beyond the marked tile, always sticking to Kyra’s side within the training room. The lighting was dimmer as she made her way past various stalagmites, columns, and boulders.

The sensation in her chest transitioned to a feeling of a leash lugging her, its handler uncaring of the obstacles in between her and them. More than once she had to face cleaving pain to walk around a rock, column, or small rivers that emitted evanescent blue lights.

The invisible rope yanked, so powerful it arched Phe’s chest, and almost sent her tumbling to her knees.

She caught herself on a slippery stalagmite, her other hand at her chest as if to assure herself it hadn’t opened, when she noticed a human form lying curled in the fetal position.

She sidled forward, absorbing the dirty, threadbare slacks and shirt. The garments hung loosely from the person’s thin frame. She glimpsed bare feet, tucked together, and a poorly shaved head, face hidden under arms.

Phe dropped to her knees, ignoring the flash of pain that radiated through her legs as she cautiously lay her hand on their shoulder. The person flinched away from her touch.

Heart beating wildly in her
